The article "Authentic learning for pre-service teachers in a technology-rich environment" (Latham & Carr, 2012) appeared in the Journal of Learning Design Volume 5, Issue 1 in 2012. Three years on, Gloria Latham and Nicky Carr reflect upon their original co-authored article. As we reread our article, we were reminded of a time when our teaching was on the edge; it was dynamic challenging and collaborative. It also reminded us of how quickly the technology dates itself and how we must be at the forefront. We understand that there is an urgent need for teachers to prepare students for a world that is totally unknown, for jobs that don't currently exist, for rapid and constant change. Our students need to stand out, not fit in. In order for this to occur, we need to keep designing learning experiences like the educational mysteries that allow them to become creative problem-solvers and risk-takers.
